Ashgrove, The Gap & Bardon

The Ashgrovian is a beautiful house with a front door that has not shut properly since 1946.

Greenlanes Road puts us in the middle of it. Gabled roofs, wide verandahs, casement windows and hardware that is almost always worth saving rather than replacing.

What we do

Open one to see what is involved

Front doors at the top of the stairs, side doors off the verandah, and the French doors that every Ashgrovian seems to have. Opened by pick or bypass so the original hardware stays exactly where it is, which matters on a house where nothing can be replaced like for like.

Mortice cases, rim locks and the brass furniture that came with the house. Cleaned, adjusted and rekeyed so they keep working for another few decades. In almost every case the original is better made than anything you could buy to replace it.

On a house this old, on a block this steep, the stumps move and the timber moves with them. Most sticking doors and missed latches here are alignment rather than lock failure. Packing the hinges and adjusting the striker costs a fraction of new hardware and usually lasts years.

A new key cut to the lock on site with no original needed, or the barrel rekeyed so the missing key stops working. Old locks can generally be rekeyed without disturbing the visible brass at all.

On the street, in a carport or halfway up one of the driveways around here. Air wedges and long reach tools that do not mark the paint, plus replacement keys cut and programmed beside the car for most makes on the road.

Deadbolts to AS 4145 on doors that can take them, casement window locks, and hardware chosen in finishes that look right on a period home rather than fighting it. Keyed alike wherever possible so you carry one key.

Why we go slowly here

A drilled cylinder in an Ashgrovian is a repair you cannot undo neatly.

Emergency locksmiths get paid for speed, and speed on these streets means broken mortice cases and holes in irreplaceable timber. The extra ten minutes with a pick costs us nothing and saves the door.

Where we go

Ashgrove and the suburbs up the valley.

Ten to twenty minutes for nearly all of these from Greenlanes Road, steep streets included.

Straight answers

What owners of old houses ask

Will you damage my original lock?

That is the thing we are most careful about. Picks and bypass tools first, and if a lock genuinely cannot open without damage you hear it before we begin, not after.

Can a mortice lock from the forties be rekeyed?

Usually, and normally without disturbing the visible brass. A rekeyed original is better hardware than almost anything sold today.

My front door sticks every summer.

Timber swells and the house moves on its stumps. Packing the hinges and adjusting the striker generally fixes it for years and costs far less than new hardware.

How long until someone gets here?

Ten to twenty minutes across Ashgrove, Bardon and The Gap. Further up the valley we will tell you honestly.

Is there a surcharge at night?

No. One price, quoted before we leave, at any hour.

What ID do you need?

Something matching the address, or ID plus proof of ownership for a car. Everyone is asked, every time.

Standing on the verandah with the door shut behind you?

One call gets a locksmith who works on houses like yours every week, a fixed price and an honest arrival time.
