Cutting a key with no original
A key is really a set of measurements. By decoding the lock — reading the pin depths directly, or picking it and taking the readings off the cylinder — those measurements can be recovered and cut into a blank in the van. No original is needed at any point in that process.
The result is not a worn copy of a worn key. It is cut to the lock as the lock is now, which is often smoother than the key you lost, particularly on an older cylinder that has had thirty years of use.
What to do depends on where the key went
The question is not really about the key, it is about where it went. Lost inside the house or the car, a fresh cut is enough. Lost in a shopping centre on a ring with a fob, a gym tag or anything naming your street, and you now have an unaccounted-for working key to your front door.
Rekeying answers that. The cylinder is re-pinned so the old key is dead, the hardware stays exactly as it looks now, and it is minutes of work per lock. We will tell you which of the two your situation calls for rather than selling you the bigger job by default.
Car keys are their own trade
A modern car key is two things: a mechanical cut that turns the door and a transponder chip that satisfies the immobiliser. Both have to be right or the car opens and refuses to start. We carry blanks, a cutting machine and programming equipment, so both happen beside the vehicle.
Proof of ownership is not negotiable on a car key. Photo ID plus registration papers, an insurance document or purchase paperwork, every time. A locksmith who skips that step is a problem, not a convenience.
